What isn't OpenSS7?

Description: OpenSS7 Frequently Asked Questions #3.

OpenSS7 has no relation to these other things which come up on a search for SS7:

  • It is not a motherboard.
  • It is not a health care system.
  • It is not a database interface.

OpenSS7 provides a complete ISUP and TCAP stack. It is a platform upon which you can build a Softswitch (but it is not one, yet). It is a platform that provides TCAP applications (INAP, MAP) in addition to the stack components.

OpenSS7 is MAP, AIN and other applications. Consider it as more than just an IP stack with TCP and UDP. You can open an MTP, SCCP, ISUP, TCAP, INAP or MAP stream and communicate to the outside world using SS7, you can even bind to an ISUP trunk or TCAP subsystem, but what you might want to do with that stream is a matter for the application.

There are a number of open-source projects which are concerned with the application level using SS7. Many of these are bundled on our software appliance.
